‘The L Word’ (2004 - 2009)

This Showtime series about a group of lesbian friends just trying to figure out life did a lot to transform women-on-women sex scenes from something that was scandalous to something emotional.

‘Game of Thrones’ (2011 - present)

Game of thrones

For years, the series was practically synonymous with discussions of representations of sexual assault. All of that came to a head when Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) was raped onscreen in a plot that was missing from the books. Fortunately, the many, many criticisms of the series have led to more nuanced discussions and portrayals of sexual assault.

‘Girls’ (2012 - 2017)

Girls

From its very first episode, Lena Dunham’s dramedy was dedicated to depicting what real sex looks like, and it always achieved that goal. From Hannah and Adam’s (Adam Driver) first clumsy and demeaning hook up to watching Marnie (Allison Williams) getting her ass eaten out.

‘Looking’ (2014 - 2016)

Looking

HBO’s Looking gave us many scenes filled with attractive men getting down and dirty with each other. However, what sets this show apart from others on this list is that Looking gave TV one of its first genuinely compelling and romantic LGBT storylines.

‘Transparent’ (2014 - present)

Transparent

Transparent has worked hard to depict its trans and queer characters, particularly Maura (Jeffery Tambor), in a deeply compassionate way. That gentleness has always translated to the show’s sex scenes, but few scenes were more revolutionary than Maura’s reunion with her ex-wife, Shelly (Judith Light).
