Green Room

Saulnier simply presents us this nutty scenario without feeling the need to lard it up with anything as cumbersome as topical commentary or moral ambiguity. He proceeds to wring as much tension and suspense from its pulpy retro plot as possible, adding a few entertaining grace notes along the way, which can best be seen in its performances. In the ensemble-based Green Room, Saulnier revels in the contrasts of personalities and styles: band bassist Pat’s (Anton Yelchin) Bill Paxton-like desperation, for instance, set alongside the weary, near-drugged-out deadpan of Amber (Imogen Poots), a friend of the woman whose murder sets off the film’s violent chain of events; or the imperial calm of Darcy (Patrick Stewart), the ruthless leader of the band of white supremacists who attempt to kill Pat, Amber and the rest. It’d be a stretch to call these characters three-dimensional, but nevertheless, under Saulnier’s writing and direction, they all manage to stand out just enough as individuals for us to become emotionally involved in their fates.

Mad Ron’s Prevues From Hell

Mad Ron’s Prevues From Hell is essentially a feature-length collection of vintage, ’70s-era grindhouse horror trailers. They’re presented in a crumbling theater by Nick, a nebbish-looking ventriloquist accompanied by an annoying puppet named Happy. “Mad Ron” is the projectionist, if you were wondering. What follows is the weirdest jumble of silly puppet shtick and super violent, gory trailers you’ve ever seen. Seriously, it’s trailers for the likes of I Drink your Blood and Blood Splattered Bride and I Dismember Mama, followed immediately by bad ventriloquist hijinks and zombie audience members pouring blood on their popcorn.

Gerald’s Game

the odder quirks of Stephen King’s novel to get at the heart of themes underneath. The result is a tense, effective thriller that goes out of its way to highlight two strong actors (Bruce Greenwood and Carla Gugino) in an unfettered celebration of their craft. This is nothing new for Flanagan, whose recent output in the horror genre has been commendable. It’s hard to overlook some of the recurring themes in his work, beginning with 2011’s Absentia and all the way through the wildly imaginative Oculus, Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil. Every one of these films centers around a strong-willed female lead, as does Gerald’s Game.

Pan's Labyrinth

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%

No one does monster like Guillermo del Toro, and Pan's Labyrinth is the film to watch for all the best del Toro critters. Following a young Spanish girl who discovers a fantastical world in a mysterious labyrinth, this dark fairy tale is less about creature battles, and more about the wondrous and strange beauty to be found in terrifying monsters.

Hellboy (2004)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 81%

Thankfully, it is not the 2019 Hellboy on Netflix but Guillermo del Toro's far superior 2004 take on the Dark Horse Comics demonic beast-turned superhero, starring Ron Perlman as the grumpy half-human. And yes, Hellboy is perhaps more of a superhero film than a monster film, but being king of monsters, del Toro delivers plenty of weird and wonderful creatures.

Backcountry

Backcountry, a 2014 Canadian film from director Adam MacDonald gets to the heart of the fear that drives all monster movies: Man vs. beast. In this case, the beast is all the scarier because it's real--a black bear, loosely based on the true story of a man-eating bear in Ontario, Canada and the two campers who faced him. Fair warning: This is a very violent and gory film, so don't watch with kids or kids-at-heart. 

Train to Busan

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%

Train to Busan follows a group of passengers who must fight for their lives amid a zombie apocalypse. The passengers try to quarantine their zombified counterparts in certain cars, but their efforts prove to be in vain, as the zombies are much more powerful than they look. Will anyone manage to make it to Busan alive? Watch Train to Busan to find out.

Snowpiercer

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%

In Snowpiercer, a collaboration between Korean and Czech production teams, Chris Evans stars as Curtis Everett, a lower-class passenger aboard the Snowpiercer train. For over 15 years, the Snowpiercer has carried the last humans alive on Earth after an attempt to counteract global warming went awry, and now, in 2031, its passengers are starting to get restless. Tired of living in brutal conditions, Curtis leads a revolt against the elite at the front of the train -- a challenge that soon proves deadly.

District 9

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%

This South African sci-fi film centers on a race of stranded aliens who have been confined to an internment camp in Johannesburg for many years. After living in slum-like conditions for almost 30 years, the aliens form a resistance movement, and thanks to the help of a rogue government agent (Sharlto Copley), they have a real chance at obtaining freedom. District 9 went on to be nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, so if you're looking for an award-worthy sci-fi flick to sink your teeth into, this is the one for you.

The Wailing

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99%

This Korean horror film follows a police officer, Jong-goo (Kwak Do-won), tasked with investigating a mysterious illness wreaking havoc in a small village. The disease has already killed countless villagers, and Jong-goo believes it has something to do with a stranger living in a secluded house. Just as Jong-goo is close to discovering the truth, his daughter falls victim to the mysterious illness, complicating his ability to truly investigate the case.

The Cakemaker

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98%

Ofir Raul Grazier's Israeli-German drama stars Thomas Kalkhof as Thomas, a young German baker, and Sarah Adler as a cafe owner and widow named Anat. Unbeknownst to Anat, Thomas was once having an affair with her late husband, Oren; when Oren dies, Thomas travels to Israel and gets a job at Anat's cafe. As the two begin to process their grief, they grow close and bond over their shared love of food, but Thomas' secret threatens to destroy the carefully-crafted life he's set up for himself in Israel.

Thriller

Flatliners provides a fascinating exploration of life after death by a group of rogue medical students. They each journey to “the other side” by inducing cardiac arrest. When their pals resuscitate them, they return to the living with disturbing and unanticipated baggage. Lead by Keifer Sutherland’s medical student with a God complex Nelson Wright, the supporting cast is one of cinema legend: Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and a completely radiant Julia Roberts. Though occasionally over the top, filmmaker deftly directs this original, snappy and thought-provoking thriller, utilizing Jan De Bont’s moody cinematography to create a foreboding sense of the unknown and beyond.

No director quite understands the alluring entrapment of suburban life quite like Sofia Coppola. Her hold of that more than anything else is what Coppola demonstrates in her first feature-length film. Starring Kristen Dunst and featuring cameos from Danny DeVito and narration by Giovanni Ribisi, this twisting and ethereal drama about five teenage sisters who kill themselves is as gripping as it is sorrowful and oddly romantic about suburban life.

Written and directed by Dallas Jackson, Thriller stars Jason Woods as Chauncy, a kid who was the victim of a cruel joke from his peers as a pre-teen, which resulted in him going to jail for manslaughter. Four years later, he’s out of prison, and back to terrorize (and kill) the group of kids who teased him. The Thriller cast includes Mykelti Williamson (best known for his role as Bubba in Forrest Gump) as a detective and rapper RZA as a high school principal. One might critique its interpretation of events, in particular, Burns’ decision to paper over the sabotage of Radical Reconstruction in favor of the more optimistic narrative of reunification, but the elegiac note on which it concludes never fails to bring tears to my eyes. “History is not ‘was,’ it’s ‘is,’” the historian Barbara J. Fields remarks, as a piano taps out its lonesome rendition of “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.” “The Civil War is, in the present as well as in the past.”

New Girl

New Girl has quickly grown into one of TV’s sharpest ensemble comedies. Creator and showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether and her writing staff keep stepping up their game. While even the best network programs are susceptible to lulls in quality due to the demanding 20-plus-episode order, almost every New Girl episode plays like a spirited, comedic gem, with Meriwether and Co. expertly navigating the line between absurd silliness and heartfelt sentimentality. Not since Jim and Pam in the early seasons of The Office has there been a sitcom relationship as endearing and emotionally engaging as Deschanel’s Jess and Nick, her lovable, hard-drinking grump of a roommate (played with great gusto by the fantastic Jake Johnson). Add in memorable turns from supporting players Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone as well as the hilarious antics of Max Greenfield as breakout character Schmidt and the return of Damon Wayans as Coach, and New Girl has officially become a new standard for excellence in the sitcom community Mark Rozeman

I love seeing shows by a theater company and watching the same actors take on new roles with each production: You witness their range and their ability to assume new identities. American Crime is a repertory theater company brought to the small screen. And unlike American Horror Story, which is all flash and gore, American Crime is rooted in harsh realities. The first season tackled an Army veteran killed during a home invasion. Felicity Huffman and Timothy Hutton play his grieving parents. In the second season, they’re a headmistress and a basketball coach dealing with a sexual assault at a high school party. From these starting points the series fans out to tackle a wide array of social, racial and socio-economic issues and to show how our lives, no matter what our circumstances, are interconnected. There are never easy answers or pat resolutions. The series will haunt you and leave you thinking about it months after you’ve watched it.
